Vintage Vid: Anna Wintour’s 2009 Letterman Appearance

As David Letterman says farewell to his long running stint on late night TV tonight, we thought it was an ideal moment to revisit Anna Wintour’s 2009 appearance on the show, where she appears to promote The September Issue and Fashion’s Night Out. (This was long before Anna revealed she was the brains behind Seth Myers.) In the segment, Dave tells Anna that he doesn’t read Vogue or know anything about fashion, but he (obviously) knows who she is and calls her “transcendent.” Nice one. To which she refers to the biting 2009 Times piece by Maureen Dowd where the writer questioned if the woman behind the sunglasses is indeed human, among other things. Dave presses her to see if there was any truth to the rumors that she is indeed the devil. “I’m very decisive and try to give very clear direction to the people I am working with and sometimes unfortunately they don’t hear the answer that they’d like to hear,” she says. “As my publishers says in the movie, ‘I’m not always warm and cuddly, but I appreciate wonderful, good work, and creative, talented people.” Dave then asks Anna if she ever puts anybody in a headlock. Watch the vid to see how she responds.
