There is a saying that “life is full of challenges” and Dr. Mike Tran’s inspiring journey so far justifies it. He is a living example of how one can turn adversities into opportunities with dedication and determination. Born in a Refugee camp in Thailand on July 6, 1981, Dr. Mike or Michael Tran saw the real challenges of life at an early age. After six years of imprisonment for fighting for the nation’s freedom, his father moved to the U.S to escape the endless wars that resulted in Communist Vietnam. They walked for days to cross a vast stretch covered with snow between Thailand and Vietnam. The family’s struggle with poverty started when Michael Tran’s father managed to earn a living by working as a landscaper. His mother worked as a maid. From then, Michael Trans learned to live minimally. He saw how his parents worked hard to end poverty by opening a family dry cleaning business. This experience created his willingness to work harder to stay ahead.
Michael Tran graduated from Dulles High School in Sugar Land in Texas in 1999. He pursued further studies in Business Management from Texas Tech University in Lubbock. At this time wanted to experience the challenges of managing a business so he started managing his family’s dry cleaning business. This experience gave him an edge over his peers. He also earned an internship at the prestigious Yale University during this time. This gave him an opportunity to meet some of the active C-level entrepreneurs managing huge corporations in the U.S. He got to learn the basics of starting and managing a business as an immigrant. Michael Tran wanted to explore the medical field because he felt a growing interest to help people. To satiate his desire to heal others, he enrolled himself in a dental course at the Howard College of Dentistry. He soon realized his talent in dentistry and moved further to study at the Houston Advanced Education in General Dentistry AEGD. Due to his natural ability to understand critical dental problems, he grabbed the limelight to become the President of the student organization. He also earned the prestigious “Smart Resident” award for best critical thinking. To hone his craft he further studies dental surgery with Hiossen and Dr. Lastimado. He mastered it so well that he was asked to join the faculty demonstrating live surgery implant courses.
After gathering some experience and appreciation from patients, he focused on starting his own clinic. The opportunity came knocking when he found a dental office was closing down. He breathed life into this office in Magnolia, TX with Floss Dental. With his knowledge and skill, he was able to serve numerous satisfied patients. He was soon able to expand to a better location in Houston which is the present headquarter of Floss Dental.
Floss Dental is the fastest growing dental retail brand with around 12 offices in North Texas. The company is planning to expand nationwide with offices in Ohio, Georgia, and the U.S Virgin Islands.
