Balenciaga: The focus on Alexander Wang’s runway this season was texture. Cable knits came is latex or bonded leather, colorful striped dresses were made from woven Japanese polyester, a cropped sweater came in ribbed fur, muff pouches were made of woven leather, and pants came with zippers that ran the full-length of the leg.

Rochas: There were more of those signature oversize overcoats chez Rochas this Fall, a few of which were fashioned in pale pink and baby blue worn hues and styled over camel colored overcoats and pastel leather gloves. Various slouchy long gloves accented nearly every look, in fact. Some came in pastel and others came with black spiky embellishments in true femme fatale fashion. Lady-like tops and skirts got a dose of edge in patent leather and some looks were worn with Matrix-esque looking glasses. A fully gold sequined coat dress stood out while other evening looks played with proportions in Gone With The Wind style full floor-length skirts mostly all done in various jaquards with hints of metallic sparkles. While the Rochas proportions and DNA are still there, it looks like newly-appointed creative director Alessandro Dell’Acqua is taking this label into a slightly edgier realm.

Christopher Kane: With so many updated references to the past peppering designers’ collections, it can seem like there’s nary a new idea in dressing to explore. Of course, there are exceptions, and Christopher Kane is one of them. Take, for instance, Kane’s dresses for Fall, in shades of black and pale pink, with the models’ arms fitted through curving sleeves that looked like sculptures. Then, there was the series of dresses made from shiny nylon windbreaker material that came either with intricate lace hems or lined with fur. Or how about the linear, origami-like folds on the futuristic cocktail dresses that closed the collection? Designers sometimes walk a fine line between cool, forward-thinking clothing and pieces that are actually wearable, but Kane masters that marriage.

Calvin Klein Collection: She’s come undone. It’s Francisco Costa’s 10th anniversary chez Calvin, and while Fall was all about neat militarism, this season was about leaving things unfinished. While the collection had the classic, clean minimalist aesthetic DNA of the brand, hemlines remained unfinished on every piece, lapels hung off coats like flaps to reveal hints of color, a pair of white wide leg pants had giant cuffs as though meant to be hemmed, but intentionally left as is, and a woven black bouclé jacket had multicolored thread woven in that hung like loops around the seam as though the fabric had been pulled.
