(NEW YORK) The world of 3-D printing continues to take shape as more designers are beginning to use the futuristic tech tool. Kimberly Ovitz is the latest entrée into this new crafting concept through a partnership with 3-D printer Shapeways. Expect suitably avant-garde statement pieces like spiky earcuffs, rings that curl and extend down to wrap around the wrist, to a sculptural, outer-space-evoking pewter-y collar.
Despite the line’s cutting-edge look, there are earthly inspirations at play as well. Ovitz took cues from insects’ and animals’ natural defense mechanisms as part of the design process. The collection ranges from $50 to $150 for nylon pieces and $400 to $500 for stainless steel. The timeframe? Just two to three weeks to manufacture the baubles at Shapeways’ New York factory. As a result, Ovitz plans to make the pieces available on her website immediately after they are shown on the runway. Talk about truly fast fashion…
