From Foster Care to Empire: Alyssa McKay is the Businesswoman Redefining Influence

by Tom White

Alyssa McKay is not backing down any time soon. With a fearless spirit and a business acumen well beyond her years, Alyssa has transformed adversity into ambition. From growing up in foster care to becoming a self-made success with her millions of followers, she’s built an empire rooted in authenticity, creativity, and grit. But Alyssa is far more than just another viral content creator—she’s a powerhouse entrepreneur, a breakout actress, and a voice that resonates across platforms. Known for her wildly popular “Rich Girl” character and her viral behind-the-scenes content, Alyssa’s ability to merge performance and personality has turned followers into a fiercely loyal fanbase. She’s the founder of the constantly sold out drop-based clothing brand Beyond Lost & the star of the #1 hit audio drama The Royals of Malibu. We sat down with Alyssa to talk about how she built a brand from the ground up, what goes into creating a chart-topping audio series, and how she’s redefining what it means to be a digital creator turned businesswoman.

Your journey from foster care to businesswoman is truly remarkable. Can you share with us a little bit about how your career started?
Growing up in foster care, theatre was my creative outlet. When I wasn’t in a production or on set, I started lip synching to scenes from film and television on musical.ly. From there, I started creating my own characters and sharing that content across the internet, the most notable being “The Rich Girl”. Now as I’ve grown creatively, I focus primarily on lifestyle content (shout-out to my Snapchat fam) and continuing to further myself in my acting career.

Last time we connected, we talked a lot about your fashion brand, Beyond Lost. How has that endeavour been going? How has it grown within the last year?
All aspects of Beyond Lost are going great!! We continue to break new ground, especially as a “creator led business” We have grossed over $1,000,000 in sales with a $0 marketing budget! We continue to incorporate feedback and design ideas from my Snapchat audience, and I am incredibly grateful for all of their support.

Now you are working on another project, The Royals of Malibu. Can you tell us more about that?
We are currently in the middle of releasing Season 3 of the audio-show!  And for the third season in a row we have hit #1 on both Spotify and Apple Fiction. What an amazing experience it has been so far.  There was such an amazing demand for more content and I am so proud that we were able to deliver it.  The fans are loving this season!

What is a day in the life of recording an audio show like?
Waking up very early, grabbing throat coat tea instead of coffee, and lots of hours in a dark studio – but, it is incredibly worth it! I have so much fun with the cast and crew.

It seems like you haven’t really advertised the show other than from your viral BTS videos Tik Toks. How have you pushed the show to a #1 global hit without marketing?
For years we’ve been pushing the importance of  “behind the scenes” content. For the Royals of Malibu, I bring the audience with me inside the studio, to actually see how the scenes are recorded and the interactions with the actors.  It continues to connect in such a unique way.  I have received so many messages on Snap, where my community tells me this is the first podcast they have ever listened to.  That is so exciting!  New people are discovering TROM everyday!

Why do you think fans are so drawn to this story making it such a global phenomenon?
I think Ella (the character I play) is a big driving factor. She is a scrappy, pull yourself up by your boot straps type of girl which I think a lot of people can relate to. Also, what’s not to love about the Royal boys?

Are there any exciting details about Season 3 you can share?
Ella is in her Detective Era!

You’re a content creator, actor, and businesswoman. What’s next for you?
2025 is already off to such an amazing start!  We have some amazing drops on the horizon that I’ve personally designed for Beyond Lost and some top secret acting projects.  Stay tuned!
