Sofia Resing: From Modeling Bikinis to Designing Them

by Aria Darcella

Model Sofia Resing knows a thing or two about bikinis, so it’s no wonder Mery Playa tapped her to design her own swimsuit capsule collection — Mery Playa by Sofia Resing. The capsule showed at Style 360, so The Daily chatted with the Reising to get the full scoop.

What is it like working with Mery Playa founder Mery Racauchi on this collection?
It has been a lot more work than I ever imagined. I am learning so much about manufacturing and marketing. But it has been a lot of fun to share visions and ideas. I personally love sketching, so to transform all that into each piece of this collection has been totally fulfilling.

Tell me about the design process — what did you want to bring to the pieces?
I wanted to bring fun and brightness, combined with [an emphasis on] body shape. We want people to look at the pieces and smile. We added a pink lining on all of our suits as our signature touch in support of female empowerment.

What was it like being on the other side of the other side of the business — designing instead of modeling?
Being a model for many years, it has been extremely rewarding to see the creative side of the industry as well. It’s great to use all I have learned, together with my creativity, and seeing my creations come to life. It’s beyond exciting!

How many swimsuits do you own?
Over 100 for sure!

I’ve read that your line was inspired by Mery Playa’s Pegasus logo. Are you a fan of mythology? Do you have any favorite stories?
I love Greek Mythology! Poseidon is one of my favorite Gods as he is the God of the ocean, and his mythical stories inspire me.

Your one-piece swimsuits have such unique shapes. How do you recommend people wear them without getting weird tan lines?
I recommend people to use our one-piece suits for sunset at the beach, or to hang out in the shade whether on a boat or poolside. For example, I tan wearing the Playa, then at sunset I change into a monkini. Our one-pieces are all about style and shape rather than tanning.

What’s the worst — or weirdest — sunburn you’ve ever had?
The worst sunburn I’ve ever had was after a surf trip to Costa Rica. I was surfing for so many hours, wearing a long sleeve bodysuit, and my legs were drastically darker than my upper body!

Your collection showed at New York Fashion Week during Style 360 — were you nervous about showing your work?
Not at all, I was so excited!

What advice did you give to your models before they head out on the runway?
Feel happy, feel free!

What are some beach or poolside essentials?
Shiseido Sunscreen, Lancôme body oil, Kerastase Hair leave-in with SPF, and Facial Mist by Caudalie.

Mery’s hair is such a vivid shade of pink. Would you ever dye your hair a crazy color? If so, what would it be?
I don’t think I would have the guts. I’ve done it a few times for hair shoots, and I feel like I’d rather have my natural look. My hair is 100% natural.

Which would you prefer to help you cool down — ice cream, or a popsicle?
Popsicle.

Where is the best beach in the world?
It’s really hard to pick just one! But I love Playa Llangosta in Costa Rica, and also Baia dos Sanchos in Fernando de Noronha, Brazil.
