Zero + Maria Cornejo Spring/Summer 2018

Zero + Maria Cornejo is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Maria Cornejo, for those that remember, was an early pioneer of cool. Her Soho shop sold her collection in the neighborhood long before it was a retail destination and it has endured for two decades. That’s no small feat for an independent designer. The reason for her success lies in the fact that her clothing also withstands the test of time while somehow always maintaining a forward-thinking, cool appeal. Not to mention her silhouettes flatter most figures. We’ve had our own Zero + Maria Cornejo dress (not unlike look 12) for over a decade and it’s still a perennial go-to. This season, Cornejo revisted some of her hits from the early years like a hooded shrug circa 2003, which featured lines of poetry by her husband, Mark Borthwick. There was also her wrapped denim skirt with angled pleats circa 2000. Even fabrics like a graphic jacquard was based on an archival print. The bursts of bright hues and stripes illustrated her celebratory mood and it was well-deserved. There were plenty of pieces to invest in…long term.
