On Monday, Glamour, L’Oréal Paris, Barneys New York, and THINX made space for over 400 guests to experience empowering panels at The Brooklyn Museum for The Women of the Year live summit. Ashley Graham hosted the event, which kicked off with a breakfast. After participants indulged in parfaits and croissants, the liberation ensued!

Alex Wagner, CBS new anchor, moderated “Persist. Repeat.” a panel on how to keep pushing when the world is pushing back, which featured Chelsea Clinton and Laverne Cox. During which, Cox posed the question: “How can you be of service to the world?” Jenna Lyons facilitated “Band of Sisters,” which focused on the friendships that challenge you and open your world. Sheila Nevins, the president of HBO Documentary Films, said, “The best documentaries I think I’ve ever worked on are those about people who are missing things. I don’t mean just limbs, I mean chances, [people] who are hurting for some reason whether it’s psychological, physiological or economic.” Cindi Leive, Glamour’s outgoing editor-in-chief, introduced surprise guests Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden for a “How Do You Want to Spend the Rest of Your Life?” discussion about finding purpose in your work and relationships. “This is the time to fundamentally change the culture of how women are treated in American society,” Joe Biden remarked.

Other highlights included actress Uzo Aduba performing a live reading from Nadia Murad’s memoir The Last Girl: My Story of Captivity, and My Fight Against the Islamic State. During “Escaping ISIS and Fighting for Justice,” Woman of the Year 2016 Nadia Murad said, “Someone had to come forward and tell people what happened to us.” Naomi Campbell recalled few of the transformative moments in her life. “I remember when I first saw Iman,” she said. “I was a 14-year-old watching a television commercial, and on came this elegant lady who was statuesque. A goddess. A queen. I never thought in a million years that I would be able to call Iman my great friend and a mentor.” Actress Tracee Ellis Ross spoke of her experience journaling. She stated that writing the words “my life is mine” brought tears to her eyes.
