Valentino’s Accessories Were a Feathery Delight

Over the weekend Pierpaolo Piccioli wowed the fashion world with his Spring 2019 collection for Valentino. But what really stood out about the fabulous show was all of the accessories — from the outlandish to the covetable. It was everything you would want from a fashion show: theatrical pieces that enchant you, but enough real-life items that make you seriously consider updating your wardrobe.

Erring on the fantastical side were the enormous leafy hats, which resembled the headgear worn by Frances McDormand to this year’s Met Gala.

While the oversized hats likely won’t be seen on the streets (although they should — they offer ample coverage from the sun), one embellished item from the collection that certainly will are the shoes. Remember when Gucci and Celine made furry loafers and Birkenstock’s all the rage a few season ago? Well, Piccioli has found their natural It-shoe evolution: feathers! Espadrilles and a variety of sandal styles made their way down the runway, heralding a bright and colorful summer.

Also lust-worthy were the big belts and tiny sunglasses — perfect evidence that the right accessories really can make an outfit pop. As an added aside, the earrings in these photos are pretty major as well.

This is not to say that Valentino didn’t reinforce any of this season’s trends. In fact, it appears that all throughout fashion month the biggest re-occurring theme has been for classic, lady-like handbags, and the Italian house had those in spades. Behold:

Fall may have only just arrived, but these wares already have us excited for a breezy, beachy Summer ’19. Thanks, Pierpaolo Piccioli!
