14 Breakout Trends From Milan Fashion Week Spring 2027

Millennial flashbacks commence!

by Charles Manning

So many of the trends that dominated the top shows at Milan Fashion Week this season felt like throwbacks to a time (and style) that most Millennials probably thought they had left in the dust: bubble hems, three- and four-button blazers, booty shorts, etc. You thought they were gone forever, but they’re back, baby! Along with skintight pedal pushers, mullet skirts, and more exposed bras than a Victoria’s Secret window display. And yet, triggering as some of these trends may be for those in their 30s and 40s (not to mention Gen X), there was a freshness to what walked the runway for Spring 2027. Perhaps it was the styling. Or the fact that young, beautiful people (aka models) can make anything look good. We’ll leave that up to you to decide. We’re not here to judge. Just to report. And this is what we saw.

1. Pencil Skirts

Prada set the skirt-first agenda on day one of Milan Fashion Week. And not just pencil skirts. Pleated skirts, A-lines skirts, all sorts of skirts. But the show opened with a pencil skirt and it closed with a pencil skirt, so that’s where we’re starting. After all, as Prada goes, so goes the fashion industry.

2. Bubble Hems

These were big news in New York and they continued to be one of the strongest trends of the season in Milan. Sometimes they were short. Sometimes they were long. Millennials know this can be a challenging trend to pull off, but designers this season sure are making it look easy.

3. Bras. So Many Bras.

Again, Prada set the bra-as-top agenda this season on day one of the shows, featuring nearly three dozen bra tops among their 63 looks. Well, three dozen if you count tube tops, which we are. Sometimes the bra tops were more bra than top. Sometimes they we more top than bra. Sometimes they were under open blouses. Other times they sort of floated on top of shift dresses. The point is, they were everywhere, so if you want to be stylish in 2027, you better be prepared to get your bra out.

4. The Suggestion of Bras

This was a less prominent trend, but once again Millennials will know it well. In addition to actual bra tops, a number of designers showed pieces designed to merely look as if the top of the bra was being exposed. A sort of brassiere trompe l’oiel, if you will. It really worked at Marni. Love what Meryll Rogge is doing over there. Love!

5. High-Placket Jackets

Thrift stores in New York are and have long been bursting at the seams with these high-collar blazers and coats. No one wants them. At least… no one did. Designers have been pushing for the return of this particular fashion relic for a while now and this season there were some compelling arguments for the resurrection of three- and four-button tailoring courtesy of Jil Sander, Marni, and Moschino. Of course, if you’re not quite ready for the return of this particular silhouette, we get it. You’ve been burned before. But who knows, by the time these jackets hit stores six months from now, you may feel differently. Time heals all wounds, after all.

6. XL Pants

Hammer time, anyone? Kidding! Well… sort of. Pants have been getting bigger and bigger lately and, honestly, we’re here for it. There’s something so chic about a truly voluminous trouser. This season they ran the gamut from silky and sheer to sturdy and billowing. Of course, the problem with giant pants is that the hems tend to drag on the ground — turning raggedy after the first wear — but that’s not really an issue this season, as many of the most voluminous trousers came gathered at the ankle. All the better to show off your new shoes.

7. Pedal Pushers

At the other end of the trouser spectrum are the skintight pedal pushers, which were far less prominently featured this season, but could very well gain traction in the seasons to come, much to many a Millennial’s chagrin.

8. Wrinkles

Steamer? I hardly know her! Intentional wrinkles like the ones shown on garments at Jil Sander and Marni are a nightmeare to maintian, but that’s your dry cleaner’s problem. This season, even the clothes that weren’t intentionally wrinkled often had a sort of rumpled, lived-in quality. Let’s call it ease. But a very studied and particular kind of ease.

9. Booty shorts

Honestly, Gen Z, have at it. Wear them while you can because no ass stays perky forever.

10. Oversize leather jackets

Another big throwback look. These amply proportioned jackets feel especially nostalgic paired with mini skirts, hot pants, or similarly abbreviated bottoms.

11. Mullet hems

Looks like Giambattista Valli bought back his namesake brand just in time, because his signature silhouette is surging for Spring 2027.

12. Cutout Body Suits

For those who want a little more coverage than a mere bra top can offer. Just a little bit, though.

13. Safari-ish

Not, like, actual safari. Really just safari pockets. Four of them. On the front. With little flaps.

14. Lacy Little Nothings

If Rachel Green on Friends taught us Millennials anything, it’s that lingerie is only lingerie when you wear it inside. Once you take it out of the house, it’s just clothes. Naked clothes, but clothes nonetheless.

Did we miss anything? Probably. And, honestly, there were a plethora of mini trends that we barely even touched on. Still, this is a good start.

On to Paris!
