Joining the likes of Christopher Kane, Joseph Altuzarra, and Pomellato, Bottega Veneta’s Tomas Maier is getting a major boost from Kering. The luxury conglomerate already owns Bottega; now they’re honing in on helping the brand’s creative director develop his namesake brand. The two parties have agreed to a joint venture, with Kering acquiring a large stake in the company and providing capital which the brand will use to expand.
Christopher Kane: Just because a brand has been acquired by Kering, one of the largest fashion conglomerates in the world, doesn’t mean they have to go all commercial. And just because they announce they are opening their first retail shop today, doesn’t mean they’re heading down a more mainstream path. Christopher Kane has proved he can stay true to his aesthetic while making smart business choices for his brand. From scientific cutouts breaking down the anatomy of a flower, to raindrops falling down outfits (which are clearly appropriate for the London weather), Kane proves he’s still got it all going on. While flowers for spring are nothing new, this lab-apropos approach to flora removes the romanticism from the collection, instead dissecting the interior of the fauna and imposing it on floaty frocks, straight out of the chicest science textbook you’ve ever laid eyes on. The collection was not completely cut and dry: a few sequins as well as super sheer silhouettes made appearances as well. Other, subtler sentiments of blooms were found in the form of jewels playing with the shape of a dark suit, lifting the hem of a taupe silk dress, and encircling the neckline of a simple black frock.
Exec news alert: Kering announced its appointment of Alexandre de Brettes as the new CEO of Christopher Kane. The hire comes internally, as de Brettes was previously the director of financial communications and market intelligence at Kering. Fast expansion is expected for the London-based brand, helmed by Christopher Kane and his sister, Tammy Kane, who serves as the label’s creative director. What’s in store? The brand’s first boutique is slated to open in London in 2014.
Saint Laurent has a new CEO at its helm: Today, the brand announced the arrival of exec Francesca Bellettini. She will succeed Paul Deneve, who leaves the exec post after two years to pursue a career in the tech industry. Bellettini was poached from her position at Bottega Veneta, which, like Yves Saint Laurent, is in Kering’s portfolio of luxe brands.
Today, the fashion conglomerate formerly known as PPR has officially become Kering. The news was announced at the company’s annual meeting. PPR stood for Pinault-Printemps-Redoute, and the company has announced that they plan to sell of their final retail business, La Redoute, by the end of the year as they become solely focused on their ownership of several fashion and lifestyle brands like Gucci and Puma.
Balenciaga is said to be suing Nicolas Ghesquière over inflammatory comments he made regarding management at the fashion house in an exclusive interview to System magazine in April. Challenges, a French business magazine, broke the news that Kering (formerly PPR), which owns Balenciaga, would be suing the designer.
