Paris Fall 2014: Balenciaga, Balmain, Carven, Vionnet
Balenciaga: The focus on Alexander Wang’s runway this season was texture. Cable knits came is latex or bonded leather, colorful striped dresses were made from woven Japanese polyester, a cropped sweater came in ribbed fur, muff pouches were made of woven leather, and pants came with zippers that ran the full-length of the leg.
Milan Fall 2014: Dolce & Gabbana, Marni, Bottega Veneta
Dolce & Gabbana: It was a fashion fairy tale on Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana's runway. Stepping away from the ornate Sicilian references from previous collections, this season was all about fantasy of a different kind. Instead of giant gold coins as bling-y accents, Fall involved childlike appliqués of swans, owls, foxes, flowers, and birds perched on branches. Little Red Riding Hood would simply adore that rouge hooded fur with oversize pockets. Other looks, like an ornately beaded gold dress with matching boots and a matching medieval style hood, or a pewter brocade three-quarter sleeve dress coat with a...
Milan Fall 2014: Salvatore Ferragamo, Jil Sander, Missoni
Salvatore Ferragamo: Retooled classics ruled for Fall, with luxe takes on a caped coat, elegantly trimmed toppers, and elegant knits. Tale black leather boots trimmed in subtle embellishments felt work apropos and a little edgy all at once, while noir leather piping felt crisp on every piece it festooned. Animal prints worked particularly well on coats and capes that just looked incredibly rich (as did the collection at large). Meanwhile, cinchers were moderate in width and prominent in the Creative director Massimiliano Giornetti toyed around pleats and croc with aplomb, usually in separate looks. The collection’s overall effect? Sumptuous...
Milan Fall 2014: Tod's, Versace, Sportmax
Tod’s: Taking Tod's luxurious Milanese leather and turning it into a collection of highly covetable pieces is what Alessandra Facchinetti has done this season following up a glowing first season helming the brand as creative director. This collection was equally stunning. There were leather geometric printed ponchos, a ‘70s style tie top done entirely in burgundy leather, and a patent leather lavender skirt suit. Graphic checks came on a fully white cashmere look bedecked in black lines, plus a knit turtleneck dress in navy, accented with a maroon leather peplum belt and matching fedora with a wide brim that...
Milan Fall 2014: Prada, Max Mara, Just Cavalli
Prada: More than any other designer, arguably, each season the fashion set collectively waits to see what Miuccia Prada’s out-of-the-box thinking will deliver. One thing is for sure: It's almost always nothing like what everyone else is bringing to the table. For Spring, Miuccia brought us colorfully dyed fur coats designed with giant faces, but for Fall, the outerwear was all about shearling. The coats came in colorful combinations like mustard yellow leather with cherry red and white fur trim. There were black, royal purple, and gold leather versions of the topper, the latter of which will likely be...
Milan Fall 2014: Gucci
The'60s have struck again! On Frida Giannini's runway at Gucci that meant ultra-covetable and sellable looks. Magazines also know a thing or two about what sells, so it's no wonder that Gianni's collection last season landed her a total of 108 cover placements for 2013. That's the most for any brand last year. And from the looks of this collection the brand may have a repeat success for 2014.
