Who can resist spending a Friday night with Bruce Weber? The famed photog hosted an event on Friday night with Shinola at their TriBeCa flagship to celebrate their new campaign, shot in Detroit. Carolyn Murphy (who stars in the campaign alongside Detroit residents), Ashley Olsen, Grace Coddington, Dree Hemingway, Tyson Beckford, Athena Calderone, and Dennis Freedman were a few of the boldfaced names toasting Weber.
In totally awesome news…Bruce Weber shot nearly 20 transgender models for Barneys’ new catalog and campaign ads, The New York Times reports. It’s the brilliant idea of Dennis Freedman, who tells The Grey Lady: “I was exquisitely aware that in the last decade, the L.G.B. communities have made extraordinary advances, and the transgender community has not shared in that progress.” The campaign features models ranging in age from 17 to early 30s, and the catalog will feature excerpts from Patricia Bosworth’s interviews with the participants. Applause, applause, applause…
Edward Leida, formerly design director at Town & Country, has left the media game to join the retail scene. His new title? Vice president design director for Barneys New York. His departure from T&C was unexpected, as the veteran designer spent two years with the society magazine.
Three days after the announcement, you’re still talking about Dennis Freedman. With his storied background as creative director of W, Barneys New York’s new creative director is primed to usher in an era of art and luxury at the retailer. What will happen to the humor, the kitsch, the verve? Expect more of a focus on “taste” and “luxury,” loves.
