Saturdays NYC Opens Second Australian Flagship

by Paige Reddinger

Saturdays NYC opened its second Australian brick and mortar in Melbourne’s business district. The fashion brand, which was founded by Morgan Collett, Colin Tunstall, and Josh Rosen in 2009, started out as a lifestyle shop in Soho where New York City surf enthusiasts could hang out and grab a coffee while shopping surf boards and Saturdays-branded T-shirts. It quickly developed a cult-status appeal with the signature T-shirts spotted on nearly every stylish guy below 14th street. Since then, it’s grown into a full-blown menswear brand with everything from apparel to footwear, sunglasses, candles, bags, and small leather goods. The new Australian outpost is Saturdays’ eighth retail location around the globe with two in New York City, two in Australia, and four in Japan.

The first Australian Saturdays store opened in Bondi Beach and the new Melbourne location on 9, Albert Coates Lane opens the brand up to a new customer in a more business-centric area. The store was designed by Akin Creative and is likened to a contemporary gallery space with 1950s modernism references. “This location will have several similarities, but as in all of our stores, we use the space and the DNA of the brand and combine them,” said Collett in a statement. The retail meets coffee hangout will take shape with coffee being supplied by a co-op from Sydney’s Artificer coffee and Melbourne’s Everyday Coffee. “We love coming to Australia—Melbourne offers a different feeling than other parts of the country that we have visited so far,” said Tunstall. “The busy streets like Bourke reminded us a little of New York City. The appreciation for good coffee and the similar aesthetics made us feel like this would be a great fit.”

The 861-square-foot store will house all of Saturdays collections as well as a few products exclusive to Australia. The surfboard selection includes brands like Gato Heroi, Neal Purchase Jnr, and Haydenshapes. But if you can’t make it to Melbourne, you can shop the brand here.
