Last night’s October chill made for the perfect setting to celebrate the holiday collection of Sabyasachi for Pottery Barn, renowned Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s first collaboration with the brand. The team-up also marks Mukherjee’s first foray into home furnishings; he designed 50 products including bedding, tabletop, jewelry boxes, holiday ornaments, and more in an array of colorful and globally inspired textiles. How did this unexpected collab come about? Pottery Barn execs took a business trip to India and came across the designer’s store in New Delhi, which, according to many and the pics on Google, is quite extraordinary. The team was so smitten by their impromptu visit that they reached out to the designer, leading to Pottery Barn’s first global collection. While Mukherjee has shown at New York Fashion Week, thanks to pal Fern Mallis, and has contemplated making a move to the U.S., he chose to stay in Mumbai. Yet New York has always been on his mind. “I wanted to come to New York because Madonna came to New York!” Mukherjee said at dinner, who is reportedly working on a shoe collaboration with a major footwear brand here in the U.S.
A range of style influencers came out to support Mukherjee at the dinner at Houseman Restaurant, including Mallis, EyeSwoon founder Athena Calderone, actress Kelly Rutherford, Marchesa co-founder Keren Craig, photographer Kate Berry, Habitually Chic blogger Heather Clawson, Pottery Barn’s EVP of product development Monica Bhargava, and more.
