Rick Owens Spring 2016

by Paige Reddinger

From the man that brought you tunics cut to reveal a man’s genitalia and an American step dance crew to the runways of Paris, now comes human backpacks. Just when you think Rick Owens can’t top himself, he does. But behind all of the awe and shock of his runways is a message: Rick Owens is a feminist. Why should only women flaunt their breasts or nether regions on the runway? Why not have a show with women of all shapes, sizes, and colors?

This season, Owens’ message was about the weight that women carry in the world, and quite literally. So to express this notion, throughout the show, out trotted some models that were carrying other models on their back and on their front. Some women’s behinds were in other’s faces. Others were suspended upside down in…ahem…dare we say, a 69 position. But when it came to the actual clothing, the looks, which came in black, nude, and burnt orange, had a bit of a lighter feel. Even the more complicated pieces looked like they could simply be thrown on, so that a Rick Owens woman might jet out the door feeling a little bit more free. Kudos to the strong women on this runway and the strong women that will wear this clothing fearlessly.

Absolutely ridiculous!! What lengths does a designer have to go to to be talked about?
