Resort 2014: Oscar de la Renta

by The Daily Front Row

(NEW YORK) Oscar de la Renta debuted his Resort collection yesterday, opting for an intimate presentation for a small group of editors at his showroom, certainly scaled back compared to his usual big production. However, the clothes were anything but scaled back. Of course, standard ladylike Oscar classics were aplenty, like a floral Watteau-back shirt paired with a matching pencil skirt or a pale pink early-’60s style tweed suit paired with a cream lace shirt and ivory lattice booties.

However, the standouts were in the stunning eveningwear realm. Cocktail dresses came in exaggerated silhouettes and intricate beaded and embroidered details. To wit: A midnight blue floral strapless dress had a big billowing peplum skirt that fell mid thigh over a slimmer pencil skirt beneath, and a black tulle A-line below-the-knee dress overlaid a shorter black dress beneath for a hint of skin and was embroidered with coral, baby blue, and canary yellow flowers.

Meanwhile, the black tie gowns took the cake, with pieces like a subtly dramatic cobalt blue column dress with black embroidered flowers that traced the front of the dress from the neck to the hem. A black sequined semi-sheer floor-length skirt was paired with a white sheer top, both sporting latticed detailing; the lot of it was then accessorized with a long emerald stone necklace. Slightly edgy, Oscar! The final look was an elegant lime green wrap top with an exaggerated bow, shown with an azure blue: a vivid color combo bound to flatter the full range of Mr. de la Renta’s faithful fans. Simply sublime!
