The Today Show’s bright and bubbly host Savannah Guthrie was hamming it up on the red carpet at The Hollywood Reporter’s 35 Most Powerful People in Media party last week. We caught up with the NBC darling, who arrived with her hubby (whom halfway through interviews she demanded go inside to enjoy the party—”Go have a drink! You could have been wasted by now!”), about media, fashion, and more. Take it away, Savannah!

What were your first days back after maternity leave like?
“Some of the moms that I work with reached out to me and said, ‘I know it’s kind of hard on the first day.’ And I really appreciated that.”

Who did you look up to when you were first getting your start in media?
I always loved Diane Sawyer, and I loved Katie Couric. And obviously Barbara Walters! She was a huge inspiration.

Which designers do you prefer to wear when you’re on air?
Since I’m a mom who gave birth four months ago, I feel good in any designer that fits [Laughs]. I’m thrilled with any of my dresses that still zip all the way up. [Tonight] I’m wearing Alexander McQueen—I like his dresses, and I think an A-line is universally flattering on us ladies. And Lela Rose—I really love her. She has really fun and cute dresses. [My clutch] has my initials on it—it’s by Edie Parker.”

We are at The Pool, the former Four Seasons—when was the last time you were in a pool?
I have not been in a pool since last summer! Time to hit the gym…and time to get out my mumu!
