Attention, documentary aficionados: last night, The Cinema Society premiered HBO’s Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer. Directors Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin worked alongside a slew of celebrity guests to take in the film’s extraordinary and inspiring account. Need a brief recap? The Sundance-praised film tells the unbelievable story of young women seeking change to benefit their country through acts of performance art in Russia. In fact, according to Pozdorovkin, expect big things historically: “It is going to go down in history as the most famous controversial piece of performance artâ€.
It’s the book we should have written! French publisher Flammarion will be releasing a book of classic Karl Lagerfeld quotes next fall. They didn’t work with the Kaiser on the book, but WWD reports that he’s happy with the outcome. Let’s hope they include one of our favorite gems from last year when he told British Vogue: “Marriage was invented when people died at 30.
Perched front row at Francisco Costa’s Calvin Klein Collection resort show was legendary nonagenarian painter Ellsworth Kelly, who recently collaborated with the designer on a colorblock dress based on Kelly’s painting Red Yellow Blue White from 1952. The original version of the limited-edition dress has been donated to The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The label’s resort collection also pulled cues from the painter’s work; but this time, Costa took inspiration from the hues inside the painter’s studio.
Another dose of Proenza power this week: after picking up top womenswear honors, for the third time, at the CFDA Awards on Monday, yesterday brought news that Proenza Schouler’s designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez are retooling the (still very chic!) looks from their very first collection, conceived circa 2003, for an exclusive Barneys New York capsule collection. Expect a few design updates, including better patternmaking, since, as the duo told NY Times’ Eric Wilson, the designers “weren’t the best patternmakers” back in the day. The tweaking process included an expansion of the range: Proenza’s premiere collection was comprised of 11 pieces, and the 2.0 version includes 19 items.
Calling all male billionaires! One of your fans is a free agent! Page Six is reporting that Linda Evangelista has broken up with her beau billionaire Peter Morton, of Hard Rock Cafe fame. The couple began dating in 2006 while she was pregnant with billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault’s baby. Evangelista’s agency, DNA, would not comment on her private life.
Busy beaver James Franco managed to take some time out of his nonstop sched to hop over to the Playboy Club in London to celebrate his art exhibit, “Psycho Nacirema,” on view at the Pace Gallery. What does Franco have up his sleeve with this one? The actor reimagines himself in a video installation as Janet Leigh in Alfred Hitchcock’s film Pyscho. Random? You betcha! No wonder he needed a little bunny hug.
On Tuesday night Milly’s Michelle Smith hosted a Grace Outreach event at her store located on Madison and 73rd Street. (By the way, be sure to check out Milly in East Hampton!) The event celebrated Morning Joe’s Mika Brzezinksi’s new book, Obsessed, and brought out Julie Macklowe, Zang Toi, Sharon Bush, and Gillian Miniter. In a nutshell, the compelling read tells the story of the power of friendships among women and focuses on living in the moment. While guests mixed and mingled, we sat down with pals Michelle and Mika and caught their summer plans and obsessions…
(NEW YORK) Yesterday, Sharon Stone’s new paramour was revealed in Page Six: Michael Wudyka, Hamptons local and owner of Enclave Inn, a chainlet of affordable spots to slumber out East. The name sure rang a bell here at Daily HQ. Pourqoui? We chatted up Wudyka last summer! Of course, we had to share our findings on Stone’s latest love. To recap: Wudyka swapped the plush Michigan ‘burb of Bloomfield Hills for Bridgehampton’s equally lush environs in the dead of winter. Wudyka ended up buying a motel right on Montauk Highway, and soon enough, a quintet of Enclave Inn locations came about. No vacancies around here!
