New York Magazine and its Verticals Will Soon Have a Digital Paywall

A big change is coming for avid online readers. New York Media will have a paywall on its sites — including, The Cut, and Vulture — by the end of November. The New York Times reports that plans for the paywall began a year ago. “I think it’s the next evolution in what we do,” Pamela Wasserstein, New York Media’s CEO, told the publication.

The digital subscription (which will cover, The Cut, Vulture, Grub Street, Intelligencer, and The Strategist) starts at $50 annually. For $70 a year readers will also receive a subscription to the print version of New York Magazine. There is also a short term digital subscription option, at $5 per month.

Though the paywall is set to hit the last week of the month, a specific date of when it will go in to effect has yet to be announced. Casual readers needn’t fret — like many other publications with a paywall you’ll have a monthly allotment of free articles. And for those of you who spend a more significant amount of time scrolling through New York Media’s sites, $50 annually is actually a pretty good deal. Think of it this way: it’s cheaper than Netflix.
