What better way to celebrate the return of one classic than with the revival of another? Max Mara brings back William Wegman’s iconic Dogs in Coats photo series (with the darling Weimaraners modeling the label’s signature 101801 coats) in a special traveling exhibition as the designer reissues a limited-edition collection of the coat this fall. The exhibit first showed in Boston, and last night came to New York in Max Mara’s Madison Ave boutique. From there, it will head to Chicago, Toronto, Short Hills, Houston, San Francisco, and Waikiki through November.
The photos were snapped in 2001, when Max Mara celebrated its 50th anniversary and commissioned Wegman to create a series of eight images featuring the staple item. Naturally, the artist dressed his Weimaraners, his signature subject of 30-plus years, in the classic double-breasted, cashmere and wool, camel-colored beaver coat, which “revolutionized how the coat was seen,” states the press release.
Created in 1981, the overcoat has since become well-known as a representation of the brand’s quintessentially simple and elegant designs. Each purchase of the limited-edition 101801 coats comes with exclusive Dogs in Coats notecards, so the original (and let’s face it, most adorable) models can forever be admired.
