Max Mara Spring 2016 Runway

by Kristen Heinzinger

Nautical novelties sailed down the runway at Max Mara’s Spring 2016 show in Milan. Navy blues, oversized stars, bold red stripes, and sailing ropes and cables (in physical and print forms) appeared in pea coats, jerseys, and casual separates—a solid collection of staples. Shoes and shades were not excluded from the seafarer theme: Mary-Jane and loafer styles had a thick rubber, and sometimes banded sole, reflecting the classic fisherman’s boot, and sunnies were modern takes of those popular among the sailing crew. Creative Director Ian Griffiths tossed in a few quirky elements to the classics, like sleeves that extend beyond the models’ hands, offset buttons on the coats, and in the beauty arena, colorfully painted eyebrows. To drive the theme home, a few T’s sported prints of waves, ships, and buoys. Even the runway played a part, with a pattern of black lines that mimic water currents.
