Marie Clarie’s Anne Fulenwider Speaks at LIM College

by Eddie Roche

LIM College has launched a new speaking series, featuring leaders in the world of fashion media. The initiative kicked off last week with a visit from Marie Claire‘s Anne Fulenwider, who spoke at the school’s FashionOpolis venue. The event, presented by LIM’s Department of Arts & Sciences and The Lexington Line, was moderated by the editors of the student magazine, along with LIM College Professor Andrew Cotto. A few highlights from Fulenwider’s speech:

On Marie Claire’s evolution:Marie Claire started as a beauty magazine in France and became more fashion-oriented. Like fashion has become diversified, Marie Claire has evolved. Marie Claire is well-balanced. All my friends are interested in the best mascara, but they are all interested in the future of women’s rights. We report on the best hair conditioner and what is happening in the larger world. Of all the fashion magazines, Marie Claire has the most socially-conscious reader…It is our social justice slant that differentiates us from the other fashion magazines.”

Her best advice to students: “Internships in the right place are great, but life experience and work experience are great, too. Do anything that can get you out of your bubble.”

On building a career: “You can’t be snobby about doing a couple of entry-level jobs. That is my old-school advice. Once you get into an organization, keep your ears and eyes open. Look around and you will see what people are not doing. In every organization, there are tons of things to do. There are always holes…keep your ears and eyes open for job opportunities.”
