Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2017

by Paige Reddinger

Holy hair! Guido Palau was working hard this season on the ‘dos for Marc Jacobs. Models sported piles of candy colored dreads in knotted masses on their crowns all the while marching on top of what looked like 8-inch platforms. Burning Man chic meets Tank Girl? If Lori Petty was remaking the ’90s cult-classic she might tap into Jacobs’ Spring 2017 collection. References ranged from steam punk Victoriana to David Bowie Ziggy Stardust-inspired outfits to Venice Beach stoners to rock n’ roll. Leave it to Marc Jacobs to close out New York Fashion Week marching to the beat of his own drum. The editorial possibilities for these pieces are endless.

This season’s show took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom, which further hammered home the idea that Jacobs’ was inspired by all of the club kids, music festivals goers, and ravers. Last season’s Emily Strange goth girl has turned into this season’s Lana Wachowski at an Acid house rave. Few can translate the dregs of youth culture into high fashion the way Marc Jacobs can. Even the celebs front row pretty much summed up the references including Whoopi Goldberg, Sofia CoppolaZosia Mamet, and Courtney Love. Miley Cyrus, where were you?
