Maison Martin Margiela Couture Fall 2014

Continuity between collections isn’t always a hallmark of the Couture offerings. But it goes without saying that the Fall 2014 couture collection from Maison Martin Margiela nearly seamlessly emerged from Spring’s offerings. The most telling sign of this pattern was look 15, which combined patchwork, heavy beading, and tattoo-esque designs, all in one dress. Those three details were the main players in the Spring show, and they were present yet again for fall, this time spruced up with cold-weather accessories. Like a fluffy fur stole over a strapless patchwork gown or a floral, swirling, and embellished floral design on a heavy ankle-length dress. For those looks that were fresh for this season, satin separates were standouts: like a bomber jacket dress that came in various colorways, such as mint and taupe, with hot pink skirts. The punchiest pattern of all would be the smattering of coins, that from afar looked a bit like shiny polka dots. Covering a strapless gown or a simple skirt, it felt quite witty. And what would a couture Margiela show be without face-obscuring masks? Well, they wouldn’t be the same. This go-around, some of the mod’s facial features were on display, through Swiss Dot masks, paired with gems that unevenly dangled from the lobes.
