Lisa Perry Spring 2015

by Dena Silver

Lisa Perry kept it consistent this season by looking towards an artist for her inspiration, and this season that point of focus was Barnett Newman. The late American painter is well-known for his simple geometric canvases, usually created from a solid background broken up by a contrasting line. Perry lifted this concept directly, striping flounce dresses and billowy trousers, which zipped on the outer seams to reveal even more fabric. But she didn’t stay true only to Newman; a grey Jackson Pollock-esque splattered fabric was peppered throughout. However, a pair of white trousers, with haphazard strokes of red paint, which the designer did by hand, were an outstanding version of her painterly tendencies. Other details to note were her use of clear vinyl, thrusting the entire collection towards her favorite 1960s direction through panels on a floor-length dress and the sleeves of a white leather t-shirt. Further proving that point? A heavy dose of dark lashes, borrowed from Twiggy’s likeness. And while Perry may have branched out from her usual point of view, we loved her subtle take on an artsy print.
