Last Friday, LIM College held their 80th graduation ceremony at David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center. The class of 2019 — nearly 570 students — was presented with a keynote address by former FBI executive and international security and crisis management expert Lauren C. Anderson.

A trailblazer in her field, Anderson spoke about defying expectations and the importance of knowing your own self-worth. “You have so much to offer others — even if you don’t think that’s the case,” she said. “Your age, your education, your socioeconomic status don’t matter. I promise you, there will always be someone who will be very grateful to you for sharing your knowledge.”

Anderson — who received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree from LIM and was given the college’s Distinguished Achievement Award — also spoke about the power of kindness and self-care. “We always remember how someone treats us and makes us feel. Incorporate kindness and compassion into every facet of your life and don’t forget that you deserve the same.”

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney also addressed the class of 2019. A longtime supporter of New York’s fashion industry and LIM, she was previously awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree from the school. “I want to make sure Americans recognize that fashion isn’t frivolous,” she said. Later, speaking directly to the graduates she added: “[You’re about to start] work in one of the most interesting areas of commerce… whether you end up in retail, design, production or marketing, you’re going to have an interesting future.”
