Adored by dancers for both its professional and everyday shoes, Repetto has started making waves in ready to wear. The French brand, which is nearly 70 years old, is putting out uber stylish Spring and Fall collections—like a pebble-printed patent leather oxford and a classic flat with grosgrain trim in any pastel you could dream of. While perusing the latest collections at Repetto’s U.S. flagship, guests mixed and mingled with a few cast members from Broadway’s An American in Paris, who channeled their inner shoe model. Cast member Shannon Rugani explains why Repetto is a favorite among dancers, and why it’s perfect for less coordinated chicsters, too.
What was your introduction to Repetto?
Repetto is known among dancers as the most luxurious and consistent ballet brand. The shoes make a dancer’s feet feel at home and the clothing is well-suited for a dancer’s body by giving it the freedom to move. The quality of their apparel and accessories are made by perfectionists—also known as the French. The French invented ballet as we know it and take pride in quality, which dancers appreciate so much. So to answer your question, I guess I was introduced to Repetto through the ballet!
Do you remember your first pair?
My favorite dancer, Sofiane Sylve (principal dancer with San Francisco Ballet) wears Repetto pointe shoes and I thought, Maybe if I wear Repetto’s I might be able to dance like her. I tried her shoes, and although I’m not quite Sofiane, I am dancing better than ever. They were the perfect pair of shoes for my foot and enhance my dancing.
When did they become part of your off-duty wardrobe?
A couple years ago I was in Paris on tour with SF Ballet. I walked past the storefront and was drawn into the store because of their arrangement of street shoes displayed like a colorful array of macaroons on a plate. I left the store owning the most adorable outfit and the most comfortable and beautiful shoes. I fell in love with Repetto’s street shoes as well as the ready to wear collection and will forever be a fan of their timeless fashion.
Where have you been in your Repetto shoes?
I have danced in China, New York, San Francisco, Cambodia, Paris, Denmark, Los Angeles, and am the only dancer on Broadway currently wearing Repetto Pointe Shoes! I’ve traveled to Greece, France, Washington, D.C., all over California and New York in my street shoes.
What makes them special, and why have you been wearing them for so long?
My body is my livelihood and I have to take care of it and maintain health in order to work and perform at optimal levels. Repetto gives me the support and comfort I need off and onstage while making me look and feel my best.
Do you have a favorite pair from the summer collection?
I love the new Flower Piercing Flat. It’s the most unique ballet flat that I have ever seen, and it’s so chic!
What are some Repetto ready-to-wear items you love?
I fell in love with the Blandine Skirt and put it together with the Irene Top. Both are so classic. I feel like Leslie Caron in An American In Paris the movie.
Why is Repetto a good brand for the non-dancer?
Dancers are very picky about their footwear and clothing. Not only do they have to be comfortable and supportive, but they have to be beautiful. On top of it all, professional dancers are used to custom-made shoes and costumes that are usually handmade. Talk about spoiled! Repetto satisfies dancers needs because everything is made by hand and the materials are of the highest quality. For non-dancers, Repetto will give you the freedom to move and feel as beautiful and graceful as a ballerina.
