Kevin Carrigan on How Calvin Klein Is Mashing Things Up for Spring

by Eddie Roche

Calvin Klein presented their Spring 2016 sportswear, jeans, underwear, performance-wear, swimwear, and accessories to editors, showing the lines against a digital installation of swaying flowers. Models stood (and reclined) in an overflowing field of Queen Anne’s lace, mums, delphinium, moss, and Scotch broom, marking another impressive transformation from the Calvin team at their 39th Street HQ. Minimalism undone” is the angle for the season, with the brand’s global creative director Kevin Carrigan filling us in on how chicsters will be mashing things up come spring. Plus! Who’s that guy?

What are we seeing for spring?
I was thinking about disruption and disrupting minimalism and the codes of Calvin. With our #mycalvins campaign, we’ve been seeing people incorporate underwear into everything. I work on so many different lines, from sportswear to underwear to jeans, and I wanted to mash it all together. That’s how young people are really wearing clothes. I’m loving this dressed-down and mixed up: sneakers with suits, underwear hanging out, denim shirts with performance. There’s no barriers anymore, and I think that’s really cool.

What colors will customers be seeing?
There’s a lot of neutrals. It’s quite deceiving because it’s a neutral palate. I wanted the men’s to have a lot of olive. For women I’m feeling a lot of pale, blush makeup colors and optical white.

What about the flowers?
I wanted something to celebrate this disheveled mashup feeling and I kept thinking of a festival where people become a little more free and spirited. I want this moment to capture the spirt of a festival where anything goes.

PLUS!

Who is the blonde male model in nothing but his Calvins?
That’s Mitchell Slaggert from DNA. He’s going to be doing lots of things with us. He’s super American, really cool. He was in Italo [Zucchelli’s] show in Milan. He’ll be doing a lot with the house.

A face to look out for?
You picked a face!
