Stylist Kate Young is thoroughly modern girl, but when it comes to glasses, she seems to dig all things vintage. Her first optics range, Kate Young for Tura, shows off that adoration for retro styles, with a modern twist. Featuring a graphic cat eye style and a classic square frame with a snakeskin detail, these are shades you’ll be happy to hide behind. Last night, Young fêted her collection with a cocktail party at Tijuana Picnic, where she sipped margaritas with the likes of Thakoon Panichgul, Petra Collins, Jennifer Fisher, Monique Pean, and more. Below, the stylist-turned-designer fills us in on her shade-related preferences…
Tell us about this specs collection.
More than anything, I wanted to make glasses that feel cool and are flattering. I’m really excited about the quality and the way they turned out.
Which style are you donning most often from the collection?
The round shape with metal brow-line inlay.
What did your very first pair of shades look like?
I had a red, white and blue plastic pair of mirrored aviators that I think were Vaurnet and said “I love Ski” on the side. I loved them!

When is it appropriate to wear sunglasses inside?
Depends who you are. If you feel good doing it, then you can probably wear them all the time. Check out Lisa Love: Is there anyone chicer?
How many shades do you own?
Too many to count!
What’s a favorite celeb-in-shades moment for you?
I love the sunglasses and black dress in the fountain shot of Natalie Portman in the Miss Dior ad that was directed by Sofia Coppola.
