Jonathan Simkhai Fall/Winter 2017

by The Daily Front Row

Jonathan Simkhai’s collection this season was an exercise in opulence. The elaborate looks were thanks to the designer’s love of old-world Spain and its architecture, and the best ones were the first to walk the runway: a Matador-inspired high-waisted black pantsuit with a cropped jacket and a beautiful dress with a circular motif. A cream bell-sleeved crop-top with a matching skirt veered in a different direction, but felt like the kind of thing that a Hadid or a Jenner might rock in a night club or photo-op. On the other hand, some of the lace and beaded numbers felt a little over-the-top. Props to Simkhai who handed out “Feminist AF” tees (alas, only to front row-ers) with a note expressing that he was behind the CFDA’s efforts this season and that he plans to donate $5 for every seat to Planned Parenthood. A reminder that feminism comes in many forms!
