Jason Wu Fall/Winter 2017

by Paige Reddinger

Wu-hoo! It’s not easy staying on top, but Jason Wu has managed to do just that ever since his debut a decade ago. Wu is just 34 years old and his eponymous label just turned 10. The designer’s fateful decision to transition from dressing dolls to designing the real deal proved fruitful. This season, Wu wanted his girl to grow up with him and incorporated some stellar tailoring into the mix for the working power woman. There were casual day looks too, like black and camel monochrome day ensembles in dot patterns for weekend wear or the more causal workday. And cozy knits were styled to show how they could be taken from day to evening. And yet, the sumptuous evening wear is still the crown jewel. To wit: this season Wu subtly incorporated 68,000 Swarovski crystals into slinky floral dresses or on a sheer gown with lace detail worn by Lexi Boling. And to say that golden hued velvet is a trend this season is an understatement, but Wu’s interpretation was, so far, the best.
