It’s On! Donatella Versace Disputes Giorgio Armani’s Comments

by Eddie Roche

Don’t mess with the Versace family! Donatella Versace is defending her brother Gianni’s legacy after Giorgio Armani told The Sunday Times Magazine that the late designer once told him: ‘I dress sluts. You dress church ladies.’ His sister has issued a statement, saying: “I find it extremely rude and tasteless that Mr Armani has once again put words in to my brother’s mouth, especially because he is sadly no longer with us to reply. This is the second time that he claims this was said, the first time was immediately after his death and he apologized to me.” Her statement continues: “When my brother spoke about fashion the only word that ever came from his mouth was glamour. What should be said about my brother is: may Gianni Versace rest in peace.”

Earlier this week Armani’s raised eyebrows when he also told the Times Magazine: “A homosexual man is a man 100%. He does not need to dress homosexual…When homosexuality is exhibited to the extreme—to say, ‘Ah, you know I’m homosexual,’—that has nothing to do with me. A man has to be a man.” Cheeky British magazine Attitude responded to his comments by putting up images of ‘Giorgio Armani’s five most deeply heterosexual designs.’ Think transparent shirts sporting nipple cut-outs. Versace is no longer about Gianni, he has passed, it is now Donnatella’s design plan that rules. That Mr Armani is still quoting Gianni, should not be so upsetting- today’s fashion has nothing to do with Gianni, and yes, it was impolite and off base for Mr Armani to repeat this again, and the Times to print something that is old news.
