This morning kicked off with two major appointments in the world of media. First up is Hearst Magazines, which has just named Carol A. Smith the new SVP, publishing director of Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, and Marie Claire. Smith, who has been VP, publisher, and CRO of Harper’s Bazaar since 2011, is adding Elle and Marie Claire to her responsibilities, as Kevin O’Malley — their longtime SVP, publishing director, and CRO — is retiring. The change will be effective August 15.
“Elle is close to my heart and it’s a real joy to reconnect with the brand as well as with Marie Claire — all while staying with Harper’s Bazaar, which has been my life for the last eight years,” says Smith. “I look forward to working with the talented teams to build on everything they’ve accomplished under Kevin’s leadership.”
Meanwhile, Highsnobiety has appointed Thom Bettridge as its new Editor-In-Chief, effective immediately. He is succeeding David Fischer, founder and CEO of Highsnobiety, overseeing all editorial content across the digital platform and print publication.
Bettridge was most recently executive editor of Interview magazine. “I first became familiar with Highsnobiety and its founder David Fischer in 2016 while I was writing a longform business case study on why sneaker blogs are the future of fashion media,” he says. “I am honored to take on the role of being Highsnobiety’s Editor-In-Chief and be given the keys by David, who is one of the smartest people in this business. My career thus far has been guided by the belief that the difference between music and fashion, sneakers and couture, content and commerce, or even next door and next continent have been vaporized by the digital world we live in today.”
