Haute Couture Spring 2014: Giambattista Valli

by The Daily Front Row

(NEW YORK) Giambattista Valli
Who wears short skirts? Valli girls, no doubt. The Paris couture shows have been all about the young ones so far, but Giambattista Valli has some of the most youthful clientele in couture. The 20- to 30-something jetsetting girls like front row attendees Tatiana Casiraghi, Miroslava Duma, Elena Perminova (the 26-year-old wife of billionaire Russian media mogul Alexander Lebedev), and French actress Solène Hébert, who recently had a cameo in Jalil Lespert’s Yves Saint Laurent biopic, will have the legs and the figures to wear Valli’s slew of ultra-short party dresses.

Short, tight minis got overlaid with gathered duchesse satin, which was either draped at the hips to reveal bits of the miniskirt below like a black mini with emerald green satin overlay and a white satin top with blue floral sequins. Some of the briefly-hemmed looks had generously-proportioned fan-like designs, such as a white and royal blue strapless dress. Even the lengthier numbers, like a royal blue satin dress with a black sleeveless sequin crop top worn over, was cut to reveal enough skin to rival “Angelina Jolie leg”. But there were plenty of non-leggy gowns towards the end of the show that would make for an equally jaw-dropping reaction at any of these girls’ grandes fêtes. A fuchsia floral crop top with red floral applique got paired with a yellow satin floor-length skirt and silver bangles. Meanwhile, a white floor-length strapless gown was graced with a painterly red floral design and twisted fabric that sat just below the hips. The overall effect? Red carpet apropos perfection.
