It should come as no surprise that music’s A-listers brought the glamour factor at last night’s Grammy Awards. While Pharrell Williams left his now-iconic Vivienne Westwood hat at home for the evening, there were plenty of dresses, suits, and jumpsuits to discuss.
There were quite a few fresh-off-the-runway looks, including a slew of haute couture creations that were unveiled on the Paris runways just a few weeks ago. To wit: Katy Perry’s Zuhair Murad Couture sheer dress that was dripping with crystals, and Rihanna’s pink strapless pouf from Giambattista Valli Haute Couture. Never one to go the demure route, Kim Kardashian, left little to the imagination in look 48 from Jean Paul Gaultier’s latest Haute Couture show, featuring sparkly shoulder pads, pockets, and quite a few shades of metallic. Also very decked out in ample sparkles: Rita Ora, whose Prada gown could have easily doubled as a disco ball.
Miley Cyrus was a vision in black Alexandre Vauthier Couture, with risqué, strategically-placed cut-outs. Gwen Stefani opted for noir, in the form of an Atelier Versace jumpsuit. Apropos for the eve, the intricate detail on the bodice of Stefani’s getup looked a bit like sheet music. Beyoncé wore a low-cut, sparkly Proenza Schouler number to scoop up her two awards, while Nicki Minaj went for a similar, but more revealing aesthetic in a sexy Tom Ford number. Madonna showed up in a matador-inspired Givenchy look that was anything but boring, thanks to shoulder pads, a corset detail, a bit of pink, and whole lot of cleavage. Never one to miss a press moment, Madge got a bit cheeky by flashing her derrière to the photographers. Perhaps the best look of the night belonged to Taylor Swift in an Elie Saab number with a teal hue and a touch of blue ombré, worn with an unexpected pair of hot pink suede pumps.
Meanwhile, there were plenty of chic femmes who eschewed gowns in favor of suiting. Haim’s Danielle Haim went with a white slim-cut Stella McCartney number, while presenter Anna Kendrick donned a black Band of Outsiders tuxedo-style getup. And how could we forget Jenny Lewis’ whimsical white suit? It was not-so-subtly decorated with rainbows, stars, and a pair of coordinating boots. Also in a white suit: Charli XCX, who paired her Moschino creation with a pink bow-tie, a pink fur shrug, and sparkly pink pumps. That’s one way to put a feminine touch on a pant suit, non? And then there was Sia, in a face-obscuring wig, who donned a super-chic capelet and coordinating pant from Giorgio Armani. Read on for the full Grammys tapis rouge rundown…
