Forever 21 is in hot water for mailing diet bars with online orders. Yesterday, Jezebel reported that customers opened their packages to find an Atkins lemon bar sample. Naturally the bar — which is associated with the popular fad diet — sparked outrage, especially among customers who ordered plus-sized items. Many took to social media to call the brand out, noting that the promotional campaign is disrespectful and potentially harmful.

Today the fast fashion retailer issued an apology. It admits to sending out the diet bars, but claims it was not targeting customers by size. “From time to time, Forever 21 surprises our customers with free test products from third parties in their e-commerce orders,” the company said in a statement. “The freebie items in question were included in all online orders, across all sizes and categories, for a limited time and have since been removed. This was an oversight on our part and we sincerely apologize for any offense this may have caused to our customers, as this was not our intention in any way.”
