What Is Madison Avenue Fashion Heritage Week?

by Dena Silver

Need another reason to shop? Thanks to Madison Avenue, now you’ve got one: the tony UES stretch’s Business Improvement District is unveiling the first-ever Madison Avenue Fashion Heritage Week from October 20th to the 26th. For the occasion, 16 luxe labels are partaking in a trip down memory lane, including Akris, Bally, Brunello Cucinelli, Calvin Klein Collection, Carolina Herrera, Dolce & Gabbana, Emilio Pucci, Ermenegildo Zegna, Etro, Hermès, J. Mendel, John Lobb, Longchamp, Max Mara, Missoni, and Mulberry. Each participating brand, located on the historic rue between 57th to 78th Street, will decorate their windows as they see fit; the initiative will benefit The Museum at FIT.

Hermès is dedicating their space to the new Le Vie Sauvage du Texas scarf, while Max Mara is reviving and displaying four signature looks from the ’50s to the ’80s. And while there won’t be any official opening soirée on October 20th, expect many of the stores to host their own independent events during the course of the week, from Luca Missoni‘s chat with Dr. Valerie Steele, director of The Museum at FIT, to Emilio Pucci’s Design a Dream event, offering a peek into how their signature prints come to fruition. Not in New York during those dates? Not a problem, as Madison Avenue BID is introducing a corresponding app, where brands will display video tours of their past, a peek at their most recent runway showing, alongside commentary from designers. “The app is constructed much like a walking tour. There will be introductory information and voice-overs from our leading voice of fashion history, Valerie Steele. And it’s all very interactive, with rich video and directors cut from Mulberry, Calvin Klein, Bally, and Hermès,” explained C&G Partners’ Jonathan Alger at a press conference on the initiative yesterday. Shopping, learning , and supporting a good cause? That’s never a bad combo…
