What: A super-cute laser-cut leather bucket bag from designer Nicola Glass’s spring 2019 collection — her first as the brand’s creative director. The bag is part of a select group of accessories made available immediately following Kate Spade’s spring 2019 show on September 7 as part of New York Fashion Week.
Who: Designer Nicola Glass joined Kate Spade in January of 2018 following 13 years at Michael Kors, where she was senior vice president of accessories design. Before that, she worked in accessories design at Gucci and was educated at the Royal College of Art in London. Glass currently resides in Dumbo with her husband and son and says that if she wasn’t a designer, she would be a professional surfer. Also, she’s a twin!
Why: Did you notice how the leather weave of the bag is actually made up of a bunch of interlocking spades? How cool is that! And you’ll find more unexpected details like that throughout the collection. “Details are very important to me,” said Glass. “This is particularly true with my approach to the spade itself. I’ve used it in both bold and subtle ways – everything from the spade-tastic to the more secretive. I’ve incorporated it into print patterns, leather embossing as well as cut-out design details. We have the heart and spade enamel turn lock, the floral spade in embossed leather and jacquard. There are zip pulls, hardware and embellishments. The spade has endless possibilities.”
Where: Katespade.com
How (much): $498 for the large Dorie tote (black) and $398 for the medium (green, yellow).
