Editor’s Pick: Johanna Ortiz Bow-Embellished Crop Top

by The Daily Front Row
Johanna Ortiz

What: A stunning Johanna Ortiz crop top made from elegant jacquard, with Instagram-worthy sleeves and a cute bow detail in the back.

Who: Johanna Ortiz launched her namesake couture label in 2001. Things took a big turn in 2014 when she began showing at fashion week in her home country of Colombia. Suddenly, the world was watching. Another important chance encounter came when Lauren Santo Domingo, co-founder of Moda Operandi, saw a dress by Ortiz at a wedding. Santo Domingo was taken by the designer’s signature elegance and femininity, and began selling it online. Other major retailers — including Lane Crawford, Bergdorf Goodman, and Farfetch — soon followed. These days Ortiz continues to design and produce her clothes in Colombia, where she works with indigenous communities and women in an effort to give back.

Why: Puffy sleeves have been a major style trend as of late. Haven’t you noticed all the cool, downtown girls rocking them on Insta? This top certainly is of the moment, but it’s also something you’ll want to keep for decades. The fabric alone — such a delicately designed jacquard! — makes it a work of art. Plus, with the square neckline there’s something of an old-world quality to it.
