Dior Goes Into the Woods for Spring 2020

Since the beginning of her tenure at Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri has been delving into the history of the house and its founder. This season is no different, with the designer looking to Catherine Dior — Christian’s sister, and the namesake of “Miss Dior” — as a muse.

Archival photographs of Catherine in the family’s garden served as a main point of inspiration. Vintage-looking botanical motifs and embroidery dotted the collection, on silhouettes that Chiuri has favored since she took on the artistic director position. There were boat-neck sweaters styled with skirts — most of them A-line, many of them sheer — and her relaxed take on the Tailleur Bar jacket. As always, hats were provided by Stephen Jones. Taking notes from gardening clothes, she also had several overalls, and offset her delicate tulle gowns with heavier-looking coats.

Models weaved through the set filled with live trees, occasionally obscured by the branches. Watching them confidently stride through the shadowy space gave a mysterious effect. Chiuri sought to create an “inclusive garden” to stage her show. As previously reported, she partnered with the landscape artists at Coloco to a bio-diverse forrest, with trees that will soon be planted around Paris. Not only were they tagged with cards explaining their origins, but they also had information on where they would be planted next.
