Adam Selman And Bob Mackie On Dressing Rihanna And Cher

by Dena Silver

What happens when the costume designers that rose to fame for their designs for two uber-iconic pop stars (we’re talking about Rihanna and Cher) meet up for dinner? A massive trip down memory lane! The Thick tagged along for a meal of epic proportions with Adam Selman and Bob Mackie, which took place at The Round Table Room in the Algonquin Hotel. As expected, Mackie offered up a slew of delicious soundbites. A selection of our absolute favorites from the legend, right this way…

On see-through dresses:  “When Cher was on the cover of Time in her see-through dress, every tired old broad in Hollywood called me asking for one just like it. Mitzi Gaynor actually wore the first nude dress I ever made on a television special.”

On the pains of putting on a fashion show: “Some b*tch held up my show one year because her ice sculpture wasn’t finished. Putting on that kind of production is ridiculous, but I hate to take fashion so seriously.”

On Adam Selman’s main girl: “Women already have an image; as a designer, you have to enhance that. Rihanna has to be Rihanna — she can’t be Gwyneth Paltrow. There are different characters, just like in a play.”

On being bored: “It’s funny how people get so serious, as if fashion is a religion. How boring.”

On working forever: “People keep asking, ‘Bob, when are you going to retire?’ Then what, I just go home and die? I’m not interested in doing that.”
