Carrie Underwood on Her Famous Arms, Athleisure Line & More

by Sydney Sadick

Carrie Underwood isn’t just passionate about music—she has a love for working out, which inspired her to start her own fitness apparel line a few years ago. The former American Idol winner filled us in on Calia by Carrie Underwood.

What was the inspiration behind your new range?
As with everything we’ve done with Calia, it’s all about mixing things that are powerful but also feminine. We’re always looking for new inspiration and colors and patterns, interesting ways to mix textures.

You started your line in 2015—why did you decide to go the athleisure route?
I love fashion and red carpets but I don’t do that 365 days a year. I do that like 10 days a year! This is my life and what I wear on a regular basis so I thought that was where my heart was. As a brand we decided from the beginning we wanted to make women feel good about and encourage them to take that little extra time for themselves.

You’re known for your muscular arms!
I do lift a lot of weights!

What else do you do to stay fit?
I also love going for a run. If it’s a nice day out I want to be in the sunshine. I do a lot of tabata and play cards where each suit is a certain exercise and every time I flip over a card it’s something different, which keeps things going. It depends on how much time I have.

Any workout you won’t do?
I’m not great at yoga so I won’t do it as a workout. If I could go to hot yoga on a Saturday that would be my dream because it just feels really good to have that stretch and I could just sweat at the same time but I’m not great at it. There was a class I went to for a while and this teacher tried to make me better but I was like I’m just never going to be good at yoga.

What’s your health tip you swear by?
I don’t eat meat. I haven’t in 12-13 years. I don’t think my body would process it well. It’s been a life-changer. I felt better immediately.

What’s new on the music front?
I’ve been writing a lot, which has been really nice being in that creative space again. There’s no dates stamped on anything because I hate starting projects and you’re rushing to finish to meet a date but I’ve been doing that and it’s been good!
