Blogger Spotlight! Jamal Jackson of Style Society Guy Blog

by Sydney Sadick

Jamal Jackson, the tres chic 26-year-old behind Style Society Guy Blog, is our first male blogger spotlight! The NYC-based man about town dishes to us on his style and how he’s turned blogging into a full-fledged career, plus more.

How did you get into blogging in the first place?
I used to post OOTDs (outfit of the day) on Instagram in 2011. I made a backup page just in case Instagram crashed, and I started realizing people were visiting the site without me promoting it. After I saw a big stat increase, I decided to just create content and start writing more. I love the fact that I have the freedom to say what I want and I can communicate on a personal level with my readers.
Tell us about the blog!
On Style Society Guy Blog, I show readers how they can accomplish a look they see, how they can build on a wardrobe, and where they can find the items I feature on my website. Style Society Guy Blog is different in that we explain how to put these outfits together and why we put them together. I share more details with the reader, who essentially walks away with more knowledge from my blog over others who just want people to look at what they are wearing.
Are you blogging full time?
I do write and blog full time, but I have several other long-term projects in between. Remember, the average millionaire has several sources of income!
You contribute to Details, right?
Yes! I’ve been doing it for about two years. The audience just naturally gets it. I get positive feedback and it feels great.
Since your blog name is ‘Style Society Guy Blog,’ are you big on the New York social scene?
I am! I cover a lot of events (about six to eight per week) mostly on my social media channels. I recently just covered the first New York Fashion Week: Men’s! That has definitely been the highlight of my career.
Is the male blogging industry as competitive as the female?
Actually … it is. It is in our nature to be competitive, but I’m pretty lax. I believe there’s room for everyone.
Why don’t we see as many male bloggers as women?
Women shop more and they are more inspired by clothing … but that’s changing very soon! The market for clothing and accessories is expected to grow 78 percent to $73 billion by 2016, according to EMarketer.
How do you describe your style?
Tailored and a little rowdy. I clash colors and prints. I wear short suits. I keep it traditional but always throw some excitement in there.
Favorite brands?
Robert Geller, Hardy Aimes, and New Balance.
Who are you loving on Instagram right now?
Blake Scott + Ashley of @blakescott_. He was one of the very first genuine people I met in this industry. It’s great when people are the same person on social media and off.
What’s your ultimate goal?
To help people make the right decisions instead of being peer pressured. I’m no psychiatrist, but this world needs some positive influencers to actually lead.

PLUS! Jamal’s Five Tips For Aspiring Bloggers…

  1. Sit down and figure out how much time you can actually devote to blogging now. After that, you can plan your topics accordingly. If you don’t, your posts will look sporadic and inconsistent.
  2. List your goals and review them every day! This will help you stay on track.
  3. You should use this ^  in your personal life, too.
  4. Have a strong opinion about what you’re saying. You want your readers to believe you from the beginning. You want them to come back to see why your opinion is so important each and every time.
  5. Do not dwell on what your competitor is doing. You will get distracted and you’ll lose focus of the bigger vision.
