Olivier Rousteing Takes Balmain Back to the ’80s for Spring 2020

Sharp shoulders! Bold graphics! Little sunglasses! For Spring 2020, Oliver Rousteing is bringing the ’80s back at Balmain. The whopping 102-look collection was an intense throwback to the decade’s extreme aesthetic. There even seemed to be references to Grace Jones and Claude Montana. And while he wasn’t emblematic of the ’80s, there also were nods to the work of artist Frank Stella.

To be fair, Rousteing has been on a bit of an ’80s trip for a while. He seems to love toying the decade’s drama and pop culture references. While he so far has managed to find new ways to explore the theme — kudos that none of his ’80s collections repeat styles! — it would be nice to see him stretch his wings again soon.

Also notable this season was the house’s makeup collaboration with Kylie Jenner. The line — which is officially available now — was teased earlier this week. Drawing from Balamin’s February couture collection, the collab features mostly pastel colors. While one would expect go-big-or-go-home makeup to match the season’s theme, the muted beauty looks actually curbed some of the more theatrical elements of the clothes.
