Injecting some edge into the classic silhouettes and aesthetic of a hallowed house like Balenciaga. That’s what Alexander Wang has been striving for since taking on the creative director gig at the maison, and he did it again for Fall, with a show that kicked off with a performance by Lady Gaga. The classic fare was comprised of cocoon coats, bubble skirts, and sculptural collars, done in highbrow windowpane B&W checks and hefty tweeds.
As for the newer, more subversive details? Silver trim snaked down the seams of roundly-silhouetted toppers and the sides of swingy trou, resembling very neat rows of staples (cubicle chic!) and thick noir leather, festooned with belt-like buckles, encircled collars. Spray paint-like stretches of color were splashed onto some pieces, resembling graffiti and carrying over from Wang’s Pre-Fall collection for the maison. High slits on some skirts were fastened with large, flashy brooches. As for the kicks, flat boots ruled, and felt decidedly fresh paired with the largely ladylike collection.
