Astronaut Buzz Aldrin on Chanel’s Space-Themed PFW Show

by Sydney Sadick

Who better to weigh in on Chanel’s space-themed Paris Fashion Week Show than legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin? The 87-year-old man on the moon, who was a crew member on the iconic Apollo 11 voyage in 1969, is no stranger to fashion. Aldrin has walked the runway for Nick Graham during New York Fashion Week: Men’s in January (his catwalk debut) and is known for his crisp style and love for luxe man jewelry. Aldrin dished on Karl Lagerfeld’s latest Chanel’s show to Vogue. Some highlights from the interview, below.

On the rocket prop in the middle of the Grand Palais…
“I have to admit, I was distracted by all of the attractive ladies, so I didn’t notice this was Chanel at first, but then I saw the rocket. It looks realistic but it doesn’t look big enough to really get to orbit. Maybe it could do suborbital flights, but considering it’s a Chanel rocket, I figure it might have been designed by CNES [the government agency responsible for shaping and implementing France’s space policy in Europe].”

On whether he’d wear Chanel…
“…Mostly if they wanted me to endorse Chanel—I think it’s a quality brand . . . But I did already do the ‘Life on Mars’ theme with Nick Graham for men’s Fashion Week, so he got to me first.”

On his personal style…
“Everyone knows that I like my bling. Shiny clothes, like those on the Chanel runway, are fine, but maybe not suitable for all events—such as doing space walks.”
