Anna Sui Spring/Summer 2017

by The Daily Front Row

Yeehaw! There were cowgirls and cowboys galore at Anna Sui this season, but if you thought you were in the Wild, Wild West, you were really inside Anna Sui’s wildly creative mind. There were tourist-type Florida T-shirts, prairie style skirts, Pennsylvania Dutch prints, what looked like the Empire State Building print on a skirt, and even some ’50s-inspired prom dresses and letterman jackets. As for the footwear, there were cowboy boots and flats inspired by bowling shoes. Sui was taking us on a cross-country road trip through time. The iconic designer has a retrospective upcoming at London’s Fashion & Textile museum, so she may have been thinking about the past and her place in this country’s proverbial fashion cannon. Sui’s imaginative use of prints mixed in with nostalgic, romantic touches are just a slice of her sense of Americana in a collection she dubbed “Miss American Pie.”
