Alexander McQueen Gave Away Free Sweaters at Their Show

by Taylor Harris

Cloaking the back of each chair at Monday night’s Alexander McQueen show in Paris was a generous freebie: a cozy wool sweater. McQueen gifted all of its show attendees identical Aran sweaters, personalized with their name stitched into the tag. Neither the reason behind the gifting nor the jumpers’ significance is not immediately known, but guests of the show were pretty thrilled with the free swag regardless.

Hands down best seating card of the season! ❤️❤️ @alexandermcqueen

Paris is reportedly cool at the moment, hovering around 50 degrees Fahrenheit, so it would seem this was not a weather-related move (unlike the shiny Mylar blankets doled out at Givenchy’s spring 2017 show). Even more curious, the sweaters seem totally disconnected to the clothes shown on the runway, aesthetically speaking. Sarah Burton’s fall 2018 collection skewed more vampy with leather corseting, semi-see-through evening wear; hot red and magenta-hued, hair-like fringe; gothic lace and some badass patent leather boots.

Either way, gifting goes a long way with editors. Surely, the fisherman sweaters will function as a sort of unspoken sartorial calling card – that the wearer was one of the lucky few at the McQueen show. Either that or we’re about to see a bunch of them for sale on The Real Real.
