Quite a few lucky devils started their Labor Day weekend a bit early, by hitting The Hampton Classic horse show. Shoe maven and soon-to-be clothing designer Sam Edelman gave us a call from the Bridgehampton show grounds, in between selling shoes at his shop there and catching a few of the horse jumping competitions.
How’s the Hamptons Classic going?
It’s going well. Although the Classic has been a bit slower than usual, it’s still nice.
Do you have a horse competing this year?
Not this year; it’s the first time in 20 years we haven’t had one. But we have a really good one for next year! He was just a little too young to make the trip this time around.
So what are you up to today at the show?
We’re selling shoes and meeting customers! The amount of Sam Edelman girls here is crazy; I think I saw 100 girls wearing our shoes today.
Woah! What kind of shoes are you wearing right now?
I’m wearing really cool new Nikes that are bright, bright blue with fluorescent yellow laces. I paired them with some pistachio-colored socks.
How has your summer been?
It’s been quite busy! We’ve been finishing our partnerships, and commuting to California where Kellwood, the company we producing our clothing line with, is located. We’ve also cemented a partnership for a major accessory license with the largest sourcing company in the world in the apparel and related accessories industry.
Sounds packed! What are you doing for Labor Day weekend?
We have guests flying in from the corporate headquarters in Saint Louis, so we will be taking them on a tour of Long Island’s East End. We will go shopping in Montauk, East Hampton, Shelter Island, Southampton, and Amagansett.
Did you see Mary Kate Olsen at the show yesterday?
No, but I heard she was here. That she did very well in her show!
